About Hershey

Start your journey together! Apply now. Fostered in Pace, Florida Hershey is a 7 to 8 year old Great Dane who is on a journey of recovery and rediscovery after a difficult start in life. She arrived at the rescue with another senior, Shaggy, and they remain fostered together, both learning to appreciate safety and comfort after years spent outdoors. Hershey is adjusting at her own pace, seeking a calm, patient home where she can truly settle in and experience security. Initially, Hershey may be wary of new people, so slow introductions are important, but she tends to warm up faster than expected. Once trust forms, Hershey is gentle and affectionate—a classic “leaner” who enjoys resting against her person. In her foster home, she gets along with other dogs, from alpha males to playful puppies and small breeds, but requires thoughtful, gradual introductions. She has also coexisted peacefully with livestock and, while she may chase outdoor cats, she responds well to gentle correction. Given her background, Hershey can be anxious and prefers low-energy, non-chaotic environments. She needs an adopter who understands her boundaries, especially during vet visits, and can advocate for her comfort. Hershey is crate trained and knows “kennel up,” willingly relaxing in her crate. Her house training is progressing well, and she reliably signals when she needs to go out. She settles nicely at night with great nighttime habits and happily shares the bed. Hershey doesn’t display destructive behaviors and is not known for counter surfing, shoe stealing, or chewing on inappropriate items. She does best with some access to a secure indoor/outdoor space, particularly when left alone. Due to food aggression stemming from her previous neglect, she must be fed separately. After coming into rescue underweight at 75 pounds, she now enjoys a healthy 130 pounds and is recovering well from her recent spay surgery. A calm, predictable home will best suit Hershey—ideally with a patient, experienced adopter who can commit to slow introductions, routine, and respecting her need for space. Well-balanced canine companions are fine with proper introduction, but feeding must always be done separately. An adopter who is home often and can offer a steady routine would be perfect. Hershey is vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, heartworm negative, and ready for a loving home. Her adoption fee is $300. Please note, adopters must pick her up in person—no transport is available for this gentle giant. They are ready to love you; are you ready to apply?
