About Ophelia

Ophelia — She Will Get There. And When She Does, You Will Feel Like You Won Everything. In January, Ophelia could not be touched. By mid-February, she was letting her foster pet her. Now she occasionally wanders over to the roommates for cuddles too, entirely on her own terms, entirely because she decided they had earned it. Her progress may sound slow, but each day is a huge leap towards her full potential. Ophelia does not have an aggressive bone in her body — not one. She is, at her core, pure gentleness. What she has is fear, and a very reasonable need to verify that the world around her is safe before she lets it in. She is working on that verification process every single day, and the progress she has made is the kind that makes everyone in the house stop and pay attention when it happens. She will follow her favorite person from room to room like a small, devoted shadow once she has decided you are her person. She loves other dogs and seems comfortable around cats. She will watch Dog TV with genuine investment, check herself out in the mirror with what can only be described as quiet confidence, and she maintains a committed and non-negotiable sock collection whose contents are not up for discussion. She loves walks, cuddles with her favorite human, and chewing on stuffed animals. She knows her name and the command "up," and she is actively working on more. She is not particularly food motivated — peanut butter and fish have been offered and rejected with the energy of someone who has standards — so her training path looks a little different, and that is okay. She is learning fetch with great enthusiasm for the throwing portion and a more philosophical approach to the retrieval portion. Indoors, especially around new people and particularly around men, Ophelia may hide. Outside she is noticeably more confident, and loud noises and storms can disrupt her potty training progress because she is, understandably, still working through some anxiety about the unpredictability of the world. She needs patience, not pressure. Space to come to you rather than being approached. Small wins celebrated like the enormous victories they actually are. Ophelia needs someone who understands that trust, when it has not come easily, is the most valuable thing a dog can offer. She is not a project. She is a dog who has been let down by something along the way and is quietly, steadily, bravely deciding to try again anyway. She has already come so far on her own. She just needs the right person to show her how good the rest of it can be. Adoption is $275, which includes spay/neuter at our vet, vaccines, dewormer, microchip, and clean bill of health. Although we work to potty train all of our dogs, we cannot guarantee full house training before adoption. Regression is a normal part of transitioning to a new home.
