About Hazelnut
Lets make it official, apply to adopt! Hazelnut is a gorgeous, approximately 65-pound, four-year-old spayed female German Shepherd Dog who is overflowing with energy, devotion, and a heart full of affection. She thrives on cuddles, often burying her head into your chest when given the opportunity, and has a special fondness for women while warming up comfortably to men as well. Hazelnut adores being petted but prefers not to be touched near her back end or groin, moving away if she feels uneasy, though she has never shown any aggression. She is friendly with strangers after a gentle introduction and will bark initially, showing a protective side that will grow as she settles into her forever home—making her a great fit for someone with experience handling German Shepherds. Hazelnut is currently residing at German Shepherd Rescue of Sacramento Valley alongside other dogs, where her protective instincts are less pronounced. While her exposure to children is limited, she likely would do well with older kids, though her playful mouthing might be excessive for younger ones. Hazelnut exhibits a complex play style with other dogs: she interacts playfully, especially when relaxed indoors, though her energetic approach to play—circling, barking, and lunging—can get overwhelming for her canine companions. She is responsive to redirection and crate commands, behaving calmly in her crate when needed. Although dog park environments may not be ideal for her, she could thrive with a confident, playful male dog and an experienced handler willing to guide her ongoing training, especially for leash etiquette and dog reactivity. She must go to a cat-free home, as her behavior with cats is unknown and will not be considered. Hazelnut is fully housetrained with no history of accidents, mellow and loyal indoors, content to lay by your side and follow you around—she’s sure to become a classic "Velcro" dog. She enjoys car rides and is a polite travel companion. Hazelnut’s playful spirit shines through her love of swimming, chasing water from a hose, and engaging with toys and tug games. Once a shy stray, she has blossomed into a loving companion with the support of dedicated rescue staff. Hazelnut is eagerly waiting for that special person ready to provide her the guidance, activity, and affection she’s earned. Every animal deserves a happy ending. This one starts with you.
