About Shep
Shep is a delightful Australian Shepherd currently living in Arlington Heights, IL. At about 3 years old and weighing around 45 pounds, he embodies the intelligence and energy characteristic of his breed. Shep is always ready for action, whether he's mastering new tricks, solving puzzles, or entertaining himself with his favorite toys. He’s a real Velcro dog, loving to be close to his people and often seeking attention by resting his head on your lap. Shep thrives in an active environment where his clever mind can engage with training, enrichment, and playful activities. This need for stimulation makes him ideal for owners who appreciate the unique traits of herding dogs, including their loyalty and eagerness to learn. He has successfully lived with young children and generally does well with them, though his energy level may be overwhelming for very small kids. While he has previously shared his space with other dogs, the best outcome for Shep might be as an only dog or with a compatible, lively companion. He does have a strong prey drive and will chase small animals, so a cat-free home is preferred. Shep is fully house trained and crate-trained, making him an excellent addition to the family. His new home should provide a securely fenced yard where he can expend his energy safely. Shep’s training is well underway; he knows basic commands and is currently learning more advanced tricks. However, he can be somewhat reactive toward unfamiliar dogs and people during walks, and continued training in this area will be essential. His future family should have a commitment to ongoing training and understanding of herding breeds. Shep is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Proof of heartworm prevention for any current or previous pets is required to adopt from our organization. Let’s see if you and Shep can be a match!
