About Princess Penelope

Ready for this 6 lb toy poodle to steal your heart? Meet Princess Penelope! This 1 year old spunky diva is looking for a royal palace to call her own. After coming from a puppy mill (where over 420 dogs were confiscated), she deserves nothing short of a life of luxury. Before her rescue, Princess Penelope had never even touched grass: the dogs were kept in bathroom-sized concrete pens their whole lives. Until her rescue, she had never even worn a collar, or used a leash. She was matted, starved, and so malnourished she broke her arm jumping off a 15" cushion. Now that she is recovered and spayed, she has left her past behind her and loves the spoiled life. We usually discourage small dog adopters from babying their dogs just because of their size, but this girl truly loves to be pampered. Her hobbies include riding in her stroller or baby sling, wearing dresses, fetching cat toys, and creating mischief. She loves to play with her cat and dog siblings, but likes to remind them she is still their supreme overlord (as toy dogs do). She is an angel at the groomers, and sits well for all sorts of hair cuts. Her groomer adores her, and hopes her new adopters (if local) will continue to bring in her favorite client. Penelope looks cute in basically any style, and keeps her bows and pompoms relatively neat. She requires daily brushing to keep her beautiful curls healthy, even when she's shaved. Poodles need to visit a groomer every 4-6 weeks: If not maintained, matting forms painful bruises, similar to bed sores, on their skin. She is like a toddler in the sense she likes to be center of attention, might occasionally have an accident (she has one about once a month, even when she's supervised), and has scheduled nap times to prevent her from getting fussy. She is crate trained, but is only crated for 3-4 hours (max) at a time. She develops separation anxiety beyond that point, so someone that has time to give her is needed. We do not want her being bounced around from home to home because someone "doesn't have time for her". She is shy with strangers, but forms very strong attachments to "her people", and being rehomed again would be very hard on her. If you feel you can dedicate yourself to Princess Penelope, she will adore you to the moon and back. You are her everything, and she wants to be yours. Things to know about Toy Breeds before applying: - Even though she is fully healed from her arm break, there is a risk that if her adopter is not careful, it may break again. She needs a home that understands how fragile a 6 lb dog is: One without young children that could risk hurting her by accident. Children middle school age or older may be considered. Falling off a couch or the bed can be detrimental to a dog her size, so she sleeps in her crate, and is only allowed on the furniture while supervised. - Predatory bird will circle Penelope while she's outside. She is too little to potty outside by herself. - Though she is being fostered with a 40 lb dog, she is always supervised when they play. A total accident can be fatal with such a size difference. - Though poodles are "hypoallergenic" and she doesn't shed like other dogs, many people with dog allergies are allergic to their saliva, as well as their dander. If you have severe allergies, no dog (even a hypoallergenic breed) goes without risk. Princess Penelope is eligible for adoption anywhere in the US, with transport at adopter's expense. She is currently being fostered in Austin, TX.
