“Can you hear the drums, Fernando?” Drums? No. I don’t hear any drums. What I do hear is the squirrel in the oak tree three houses down talking trash about my life choices. I hear the leaf that just rolled across the sidewalk two blocks away. I hear a suspicious breeze. I hear the neighbor opening a snack wrapper. I even hear a dog blinking somewhere in the distance. The person calling me to come inside? Hmm. That one seems…unclear. What can I say? I’m a tried-and-true Great Pyrenees, and selective hearing is sort of part of the job description. Anyway, hello! My name is Fernando, I’m 3 years old, and I’m what experts in the field call “a very good boy.” I’m mostly a mellow, easygoing gentleman, but every now and then the zoomies arrive without warning, and suddenly I’m galloping around like a majestic snow cloud with legs. Because of this, I’d love a doggy sibling who enjoys the occasional burst of chaos followed by an immediate and very committed couch nap. Cats? Eh. Sure. Why not. We can all be friends. Life is short. Let’s form an alliance! I’m also great on a leash and housebroken, which means I’m basically the ideal roommate. I don’t cook, but I do provide excellent moral support and occasional dramatic staring. And guess what? Kids are fantastic! Tiny humans? Delightful! Medium humans? Excellent! Tall humans? Also acceptable! In my dream home, I’d love a physically fenced yard so I can patrol my kingdom properly and keep tabs on important neighborhood activity like: • suspicious squirrels • leaves with bad intentions • distant snack wrappers • possibly… drums??? A playmate would also be wonderful — whether that’s another dog or one of those small wobbly humans that drop snacks sometimes.
