The Pointer, sometimes called the English Pointer, is a lean, athletic sporting dog, usually 23 to 28 inches tall and 45 to 75 pounds. Its short, glossy coat is typically white with liver, lemon, orange or black patches or ticking, and it sheds moderately all year. Developed in England to find birds and hold a rigid point, it carries real stamina.
In Muskegon, that stamina is the main thing to plan around. Many Pointers are gentle and affectionate at home but reserved with strangers, and a strong bird instinct means gulls and geese along the lakeshore can pull hard on a leash. Dogs vary, and some Pointers have far more drive than others. Expect a dog that does best with daily runs, patient reward-based training and a warm indoor bed.
