Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the high plateau of central Turkey, bred to live with flocks and decide on their own when a predator is a threat. Adults are big and rangy, with males commonly 110 to 150 pounds and females 80 to 120. The coat runs from short to rough with a thick undercoat, and fawn with a dark mask is the classic look, though many colors occur.
That independence follows the dog into city life. Many Anatolians are calm and gentle at home but wary of visitors, and they mature slowly, often not until two or three years old. In San Jose, that means working on leash manners for sidewalks, setting up secure fencing and planning for guests well before the dog is fully grown. Dogs vary, so spend time with the dog you're considering.
