Seen roaming their neighborhood for several days, Dakota’s finder left food and water out for him, hoping to be able to lure him up to them to lay hands on him to determine if he had a collar with an ID tag. They were successful in ‘luring’ him in, however it seemed that their two dogs did better at attracting him than did the food and water they left, as he came up to hang out with them and have playtime! Dakota’s finders went to the surrounding homes in hopes of finding his home, but had no luck. They then brought him to the shelter so we could help to find his family, but with no chip and no family coming to claim him, he is now available for adoption. While they only had him briefly before bringing to us, Dakota’s finders did let us know how friendly he was. While they were doing the paperwork with our staff, this sweet boy calmly sat in the lobby with their son letting him love all over him, as if to try to ease the young human’s mind, as he wept over having to leave his newfound canine friend. Since his arrival to our shelter, Dakota has been both easy to leash and to walk in and out of his kennel! He has met a similar sized spayed female while he’s been here and was super tolerant of her! He walked around sniffing the grass while simultaneously allowing her to sniff him all over with no issues at all, with Dakota remaining very calm through the entire interaction. Just as we observed him doing while in the lobby with the young boy, saying his goodbyes to Dakota. We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption to ensure a great fit for all. Because she was a stray, we don’t have information how she interacts with cats. If you have been thinking of adding a new family member to grow old with you, please consider Dakota! This calm and loving guy is going to make your family complete and he has forever to give. Not knowing how long he has been on his own, he did come to us underweight and is working to slowly come back up to a healthy weight. All of our adoptable dogs/puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and UTD on all age-appropriate vaccines/preventatives. Adopters will need to establish vet care upon adopting to maintain their new family member’s health and wellness. And remember the 3-3-3 Rule when adopting a shelter pet. 3 days for your new pet to decompress 3 weeks for your new family member to settle in 3 months for them to build trust Dakota’s adoption fee is $80! We are a first come, first served and in-person adoption center and are located at 430 Bristol Drive in Statesville. We are open for adoptions Monday-Friday 12-5pm and Saturdays 11am-2pm.
