Meet Darby, an 8-year-old Corgi with a gentle soul, a cautious heart, and the cutest little loaf-shaped silhouette you ever did see. At 36 pounds, Darby is less “life of the party” and more “quiet observer in the corner wondering if the snacks are safe.” Darby wasn’t well socialized before coming into rescue, so the world still feels pretty big and overwhelming to him. New people, especially men, can be scary, and when he’s unsure, he tends to freeze, pancake himself onto the ground, or retreat to the safety of his crate. But underneath all that worry is an incredibly sweet dog who is slowly learning that humans can be kind. His foster mom says he has just recently started leaving his crate on his own and timidly seeking out pets from the women and teenage girls he trusts. Every tiny step forward feels significant. He’s house trained with a consistent routine and has made tremendous progress since arriving in foster care. Darby didn’t initially understand the concept of pottying outside, but with patience and scheduled breaks, he’s doing wonderfully. He’s also crate trained and actually finds comfort there, often choosing it as his safe sleeping spot. Darby is a low-key little guy whose hobbies include lounging around the house, quietly exploring the yard, going on short walks, and gently squeaking toys before fetching them back like a very polite potato. He walks nicely on leash, rides calmly in the car, and would be perfectly content living the cozy-homebody lifestyle. Because Darby is heartworm positive and currently undergoing treatment, his activity needs are minimal for now. His foster mom suspects that once treatment is complete and he feels better physically, more of his personality may start to bloom. Right now, he’s simply looking for a patient, understanding home that will let him move at his own pace and never rush his trust. Wish Bone will continue his treatment, whether that’s through our vet or by providing medication to the adopters vet. Darby would thrive in a quiet home with experienced adopters who understand shy dogs and can celebrate the small victories. Another calm dog may help boost his confidence, though it’s not required. What he truly needs is someone willing to give him time, compassion, and a soft place to land while he figures out that the world isn’t so scary after all. Some dogs arrive ready to be everyone’s best friend. Darby arrives asking for patience. And when you earn his trust, it’s the kind of bond that means everything. His minimum adoption fee is $400 plus a $15 fee, if 4 months or older, for rabies registration for McLean County residents. He has been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm checked, dewormed, and is on flea and heartworm preventatives.
