AvailableAbout Leo
Leo came to ACCT Philly as an owner surrender on April 11th. His family loved him but found themselves unable to give him the time and attention he needs, leaving him confined for long stretches and without enough outlet for his energy. His family spoke Spanish and he came to us knowing several commands - sit, lay down, paw, touch, wait, speak, and whisper - and volunteers have noted he also responds to "here," and "calm" in Spanish. Leo is an energetic, playful, and affectionate young dog who loves to run, play, and soak up attention. In playgroup, he's been enthusiastic and social - he made a beeline for the kiddie pool and rolled around happily, which tells you a lot about his personality. Leo would thrive in a home that can provide him with plenty of quality time, exercise, and consistent training to help him channel his enthusiasm in the best way possible. If you are looking for a loving, smart, and adventurous companion who will keep you laughing and moving, Leo might just be the perfect match for you! Why or why not? We hiked Wissahickon park for the afternoon. I would highly recommend this activity. It has trails for all abilities. How was the dog's energy level throughout the trip? 4 / 5 How was the dog in the car? (N/a if no car ride) Leo did excellent in the car. He was well behaved and loved checking out the sites with his head out the window. If indoors, did the dog seem house trained? N/A How comfortable was the dog in new surroundings? Very comfortable How did the dog react seeing other animals in passing (cats, dogs, squirrels, birds, etc.)? Was excited but did not react How did the dog react seeing people, such as runners, bikers, or children? He was absolutely unbothered. Walked right by them and did not pull. Describe the dog's leash manners (e.g., pulls on leash, walks nicely, jumpy, leash biting). Leo has great leash manners. At first he pulled slightly but think it was pent up energy from the car ride. Within a few minutes he was a great walker with zero issues. How did the dog take treats? (e.g., Snatchy, took gently, or was not interested in treats, etc.) Extremely gentle taking treats. Which commands did the dog respond to? We were unaware that Leo actually knows many commands but they are all in Spanish. Favorite moment from day trip? Leo was absolutely amazing from the moment we picked him up until taking him back. We enjoyed getting him out and spending the day with such a well mannered dog. Please share any information about the dog that would be helpful to know. Leo is a great dog in every aspect. He will surely become one of the family and be a great addition to any home, even one with dogs. He was eager to please and loved snuggly in the car. Leo deserves a forever home where he can share his lovable ways. Per volunteer: 4/28 Walksheet Summary: Leo is a calm, easygoing boy with a gentle and friendly personality. He's low energy and enjoys a more relaxed pace, making him a great companion for quiet walks and laid-back homes. Leo is easy to handle, walks nicely on leash, and has shown himself to be a "good boy" in multiple interactions. He appears comfortable around people and settles in well without much fuss. With his mellow nature and sweet demeanor, Leo would be a great fit for someone looking for a calm, steady companion. Behavior Timeline: 4/22: Calm, low energy, easy to handle 4/23: Relaxed demeanor, no issues noted 4/24: Continued low energy, easygoing 4/25: Playgroup exposure noted Recent Notes: Easy, lovable, and mellow; consistently calm and well-behaved Summary: Calm & easygoing Low energy Easy to handle and leash Walks nicely Friendly, "good boy" demeanor Great for a relaxed home Per volunteer : 4/23: "He was easy to leash and walk, he absolutely loved playing with a tennis ball in the yard, drinking from the fountain and popping in/out of the pool." Per volunteer 4/18/2026: Sweet guy who's nervous in the shelter. He pulled on leash but seems like he's trying to stay housetrained, peeing for a long time when we got outside. He was slightly aloof in the yard, but loved treats and would show off his tricks for them (and took them so gently)! Didn't want to go back into his kennel and ended up needing to be suitcased by a second handler. Behavior eval 4/18/2026: Kennel Presentation: Laying down in his kennel with a lowered head and soft eyes. He came to the front door when I walked up and took a hot dog gently through the door. I went around to the back side of the kennel to try to leash him (front door opened on the left side and I prefer to leash right-handed) and he pressed himself against the front side of the kennel trembling, would not come to the back side of the kennel. I came around to the front and he stood at the front and tried to push out while I leashed him. Leash Skills: Pulled moderate to hard and erratically on leash. Peed for a long time when we got outside, pulling decreased some after that. Sociability: When we got into the yard, he did lots of sniffing and drive-by's. He did not solicit much attention, took treats very gently, and allowed pets. He knows sit and loves treats, especially cheese! Slightly aloof in the yard, primarily interested in sniffing. Play: No interest in toys. Dog Interaction: Excited to see dogs through the fence and ran along the fence to follow them. Some frustration barking that subsided when the dog was gone from the fence. Return to Kennel: Pancaked completely and refused to go in the front of back door. He took a few treats, then refused them, panting heavily with bloodshot eyes. A staff member came and did a belly loop and suitcased him into the kennel, which he allowed without issue. Color Level: Exp blue Recommendations and considerations: Exp blue due to difficulty returning to kennel. If that improves, can likely be leveled down. Per staff 4/17, playgroup: Mildly steerable with spray bottle (1/5) but not with can (0/5). Fast entry, right to the pool. Helicopter tail and pawing (mounting attempt, likely) during greetings with Sweety. Some push pull play with Labello, but primarily motivated to mount. Did so with Sweety and Juniper, neither of whom corrected and staff had to step in - but Leo's attention was pretty easily redirected. Loves water - rolled around in the pool lots! Per staff 4/12: Responds to "sit", "here", and "calm" in Spanish. Per owner surrender notes 4/15 (translated from Spanish): Needs more time; we are not home much. Energetic, likes to run and eat. When confined for a long time, he breaks things. He is very playful and really likes affection. Lived with a female dog. Not house-trained. High energy, very active. Crate-trained. Breaks many things and jumps on people. At times he gets nervous for a long time and has a lot of energy. He lunges as if to grab, but he does not bite. Knows sit, lay down, paw, touch, wait, speak, whisper. Pulls on leash. Loves any toy that makes noise and he eats everything - he likes everything. Gets happy around strangers and children. Chases cat. Plays a lot with dogs. He is a loving and playful dog. He needs a home with a couple without children who can give him a lot of quality time and good training.
