About Bella
** $300 in pledges for the rescue that pulls! ** Bella ACCT-A-128331 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Bella must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER OR EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by THURSDAY, MARCH 5TH at 10AM. Should Bella's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Bella is an adorable petite bunny-eared girl weighing just 42 pounds who is sadly on her second shelter stay. A sweet, wiggly, and shy lady, Bella doesn't ask for much; she loves the simple things like hanging out with her family and going on walks. Bella's volunteer and staff member friends have praised her for her reserved yet affectionate demeanor, who despite struggling with kennel stress upon her return to the shelter still manages to greet new people in a gentle, social manner. Adopted in 2022, Bella spent several happy years with her owner until they surrendered her back to the shelter on February 28th. Bella has a noted history of resource guarding dating back to her original shelter stay, and her new owner was informed of this at the time of adoption. While Bella was the only dog in the household initially, her owner added numerous other pets to the home over the years which led to additional instances of resource guarding between Bella and the other dog. The owner noted a recent incident where the dogs were not separated when being fed; they gave the other dog food while Bella was present, and Bella reacted aggressively, lunging towards the other dog and biting. However, the other dog was uninjured and the bite did not break skin. At the time of surrender, Bella's owner said she does fine with the cats in the home but would likely be best suited for a single-dog setting. With her behavioral needs in mind, Bella requires a loving household that is equipped to manage her resource guarding, and ensure that any food or high-value items are given under supervision and while Bella is separated from any other resident pets. With additional training and proper management of her known behavioral needs, Bella is sure to bring light, love, and joy to her new family. At this time, Bella requires the care of a rescue or an experienced adopter to ensure she is set up for success in her next chapter. Bella must find placement no later than Thursday, March 5th at 10am. They had been escalating over the past few months. I have two other dogs and a cat. Bella had become increasingly hostile towards one dog. On Thursday evening of last week, Bella went after that dog. This was the first time that I had to physically separate them. There was no broken skin on either dog. Bella is younger, heavier, and larger than the other dog. And FYI, I had two separate feeding stations across the room from one another with the same food in each. The other dog isn't as aggressive and tries to avoid Bella when she's eating. So, for safety reasons I brought Bella in, hoping that she could be rehomed. Bella has no issues with the other dog and/or the cat. Bella is good on leash, is a happy and responsive dog. She has no aggression towards humans. Overall, she's a great dog, I hope that she's not euthanized and given another chance. I feel that she would do best in a home with adults (as I have no children). Per staff 3/3/26: Kennel Presentation: Laying down in her side bank, ears back, wide soft eyes. Leash Skills: Was easy to leash, hopped out of her kennel with no issue, pulled mildly. Sociability: Went around the room saying high to everyone with a loose wiggly body, mid level tail wags, ears back and soft eyes. Leaned into the handlers when they were petting her and allowed all handling. Play: n/a Dog Interaction: Met Gojo, ears back, mid level tail wags, loose body. Return to Kennel: Walked through the kennels with mid level tail wags and ears back. Put her front two legs in the kennel and then backed out. The handler had to use moderate leash pressure to get her into kennel. Color Level: Experienced Gold. Per volunteer 3/1/26: Sweet owner surrender Bella was shaking in her crate. She didn't want to come out and since she just arrived yesterday, I didn't want to force it. Wasn't very interested in treats or PB, only licked up a few crumbs. Per staff 2/28/26: Stressed, panting, exit seeking. Per owner surrender notes 2/28/26: Reason: Can't handle Lived with: An adult, dogs, cats, and birds Personality: Loving, playful, good with cats, best if only dog in the home. General: Fully housetrained, not crate trained, medium energy. Knows "sit" and "come", walks on leash, enjoys any toys or treats. Behavior concerns: Bit another animal due to food aggression, very territorial over food and toys. Reaction to strangers: Sits Reaction to cats: Okay no issue Reaction to dogs: Okay no issue outside food Ideal home: Any indoor dog that loves walks. Per staff 2/28/26: Dog has food aggression. One of the dogs was eating food and she lunged at them. Kept going after them and they needed a broom to separate them. Didn't break skin on dog. Usually, it's just a growl or a bite and release but this time was the worst it's been. Shelter notes from 2022: Per staff 12/13/22: Guards food. Per staff 12/12/22: She is naturally reserved and fearful but opens up immensely! She walked up and greeted almost every person in the adoptions lobby. Bella will growl at someone she does not know when they enter the office. Per staff 12/8/22: Bella is the sweetest. She was so scared in her kennel but also so happy to see me and Derya, and was wagging her tail like crazy. Once we got her in the office, she was so happy and cuddly. Her wiggly walk is so endearing, and she is just such a cheerful dog. Per staff 12/6/22: Kennel Presentation: Nervous. When approached Bella was visibly nervous, shaking in kennel. She allowed me to come into her kennel to leash her and pet her. While petting her she got up and started wagging her tail. She allowed me to pick her up and carry her to the foster office. Then allowed me to carry her to her new kennel in the welcome center. Leash skills: Fearful. Carried her. Handleability/Sociability: Loose/Allows all handling. Bella is a very social little lady. She solicits attention from multiple handlers with a loose body and wagging tail. She enjoys snuggling with her handler and leaning in for love. Bella is a very snuggly little lady and is super affectionate. She takes treats very gently. She isn't jumpy, mouthy, or pushy. Play: No interest. Toys: Interest but does not take possession. Color Level: Blue - due to medical issue and not wanting to walk. Recommendations: Volunteer time and socialization. Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately.
