About Howie
Howie is a six-year-old English Pointer who has weathered a tough start but now enjoys a much-deserved new lease on life. When he first arrived, he was severely underweight and facing heartworm, but after completing treatment, he's thriving in his Minnesota foster home. Routine vet visits uncovered two low-grade mast cell tumors; both were removed, and there’s been no sign of recurrence. Howie also has elbow dysplasia, but with medication and joint supplements, he stays active and comfortable. He loves to be outside, patrolling the yard and searching the brush for wildlife. Summer is his season—he's a strong swimmer and becomes absolutely glued to your side on the dock or boat, keeping a sharp eye on your fishing line. He manages winter with some reluctance, still joining his pack for walks when it's not too cold. Despite his limp, he keeps up with the group, exploring at his own pace. Howie is easy-going, independent, and has great manners. He gets along with people and, with slow introductions, enjoys the company of other dogs. While he wouldn’t be a great fit with dominant dogs, he’s happy to live solo or as part of a balanced pack. He’s house trained, has great recall, and rarely jumps or demands attention—he loves a head scratch, sunbathing, or just hanging out chewing a toy. If you want a steady outdoor companion, a fishing buddy, or just a calm pal to share the couch, Howie is your guy. Transport is available to approved homes within 1,500 miles.
