Every American Wirehair traces back to one red-and-white kitten born on a farm in Verona, New York, in 1966. His crimped, springy coat came from a spontaneous gene mutation, and his descendants were crossed with American Shorthairs to create the breed. It remains one of the rarest pedigreed cats.
Apart from the coat, a Wirehair is built like an American Shorthair: medium to large and muscular, with a round head and a wide range of colors. The coat feels coarse and resilient, and even the whiskers can curl. Many are easygoing, affectionate and playful without being demanding, and they usually adapt well to families and other pets. Miami's warm, humid climate suits a dense, short-to-medium coat, as long as the cat has cool indoor rest spots.
