Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the Anatolian plateau of Turkey, where dogs of this type have lived with flocks and protected them from wolves for thousands of years. They work without direction, so they tend to decide for themselves what counts as a threat. Adults are large and rangy, usually 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium double coat that is often fawn with a dark mask.
At home, most are calm, watchful and devoted to their whole family rather than one person. Many are suspicious of strangers, protective of their territory and inclined to roam if a fence allows it. They mature slowly, often taking two to three years, and respond best to patient, consistent training. How much guarding instinct a particular dog shows can vary.
