About Thatcher

Meet Thatcher !! The neglect this poor dog suffered is infuriating. We are so thankful hes a happy boy now and not holding a grudge against humans after the way they treated him!! Thatcher is a 1 year old, male. He is said to be a Golden Retriever and Poodle mix. He weighs 33 pounds and is likely full grown. He will be neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped as part of his adoption. He is thankfully Heartworm negative and on preventatives. Doodles ARE NOT HYPOALLERGENIC!! This is a common misconception with the doodle craze. They generally have a mixed hair type of both parents. Sadly many lose their homes when despite they claims, they are allergic to them. They are a mix breed and carry genetics from both parents. He does not shed as much as a regular dog but he does still shed. This guy came to us is absolutely disgusting condition. His hair was so badly matted for so long he looked obese. He had poop and urine matted deep in layers throughout his fur. His feet were swollen from standing in urine that absorbed into the matted fur on his feet. The kind of thing that happens when a dog is confined in an area and made to stand in feces and urine. Its so hard to understand how anyone could do this. Thankfully he is leaving that hell behind him. He was pulled from the shelter and driven straight to our amazing grooming partner Amy at Pawpular Pets. There he was completely shaved and afterwards he immediately turned into the happiest puppy. Frolicking around the grooming office like he knew he had just been given a new life. We cant thank them enough for helping us save these abused and neglected dogs!! Thatcher is a a very happy, fun loving guy. Hes easily excitable and has a lot of energy but hes so sweet. You can tell hes grateful to have a real life now. Overall hes an excellent pup. He loves all people but men seem to be his favorite. His foster dad hung the moon in the sky according to Thatcher LOL He is doing well with his house manners and training. He is great in the car. He does pull a lot on the leash still due to being so excited to see everything and greet everyone. He has been really good with his potty training. We suspect he was left kenneled for long periods of time and made to pee and poop on himself. He has never gone potty in his crate here but he still barks for about 15 mins when first put in. Poor guy still hasnt fully figured out he wont be left in there forever. He is however learning and doing better each day. Due to this and his energy level he would not be good in an apartment. He really needs a yard to run in. Thatcher is fine with other dogs but doesnt care much about them. Hes fine with or without a doggie friend. He loves people more than anything. Hes happy and friendly when meeting any dogs and has never shown any aggression toward them. He has never been around cats so we are unsure how he would do. He is sweet and loving to everyone including kids however hes probably best with older kids. It seems like he missed out on a lot of puppy training. He does jump all over people when excited. He is also still learning not to play by mouthing peoples hands. Those things may bother small kids. Thatcher has a fairly high energy level. Hes easily excitable and gets hyped up at times. Hes super excited about life and playing. He absolutely loves to run around the yard or play with toys. Playing with balls and playing fetch are his favorite things. He also loves being stuck to you doing whatever youre doing. His new family should be prepared to exercise him each day and keep his mind busy. Hes very smart and learns fast. He would really need a fenced in yard as he has a lot of zoomies and loves to run. Thatcher has not had any issues sharing toys or treats with humans or other dogs. He was also a good boy for both the vet and the groomer. Hes a very loving boy that will make an excellent companion for someone willing to give him lots of playtime and help perfect his training. GROOMING- Doodles are a mix of two breeds and despite the hype they generally have hair from both dogs they are bred from. This causes terrible matting and means they require lots of brushing. They also usually need to be professionally groomed at least every 6 weeks. If you arent willing to provide the time and finances toward his grooming please pick a different dog to adopt Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA. (He will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius) !!Please message VillageDogResource@gmail.com directly with questions or to get an application. ***For faster response and to see more pics please visit our facebook page
