About Apricot

Apricot is a tiny Yorkie mix who has endured far more than most dogs ever should. She’s one of 24 dogs rescued from severe neglect and hoarding—cold, hungry, and left without basic needs. Apricot is about 3 years old, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped, with a recent dental and up-to-date heartworm prevention. At just 12 pounds with a medium black coat, she’s full grown and still discovering how to feel safe again. At first, Apricot is very shy and builds trust slowly, warming up quicker to women than men. With time, she’ll crawl into your lap and seek out your affection. She gets along with other dogs, preferring their company without actively playing, and has been calm around a bunny; she likely would adjust well to cats. She isn’t fostered with children, but given her background, needs a home with older, gentle, respectful kids who can give her space and let her adjust gradually. If startled or cornered, especially before trusting you, she may try to bite; she simply needs space and patience instead of being grabbed or picked up. Apricot rides quietly in the car, doesn’t get sick, and remains very nervous with leashes and outside spaces. She’s not yet house trained for outdoor walks, so she relies on puppy pads indoors and needs either a secure yard or continued indoor potty arrangements. She isn’t crate trained and finds safety behind a baby gate, learning routines little by little. Despite her rough start, Apricot shares calmly with people and dogs, taking treats gently and never guarding food. Her energy is low; she’s happy to be left alone during the day, making her suitable for someone with a quieter home or less flexible schedule. She’s started greeting her foster family with tail wags, likes the couch, and only now trusts being picked up for brief moments—a sign of her slow progress. If you’re ready for a relationship built on patience and trust, Apricot will reward you, but she absolutely needs a home where expectations are realistic. Quick turnarounds and impatience will only harm a dog like her. Vet and home checks are required. Apricot must be adopted within about an hour’s drive of Hampton, VA, to ensure the best transition. Every animal deserves a happy ending. This one starts with you.
