Abby is a small, black and white Shih Tzu with a medium coat, currently in Williamsburg, VA. She has been spayed and is up to date on vaccinations. While her exact age is uncertain, she is believed to be a senior and is house trained. Abby's playful personality often belies her years, and she’s adapting well after a difficult start.

About Abby

Abby’s had a rough start but she’s bounced back thanks to attentive foster care. She came in with a severe skin infection, underweight, and so matted she needed to be shaved. Those early photos might show some rough patches, but today, she’s looking brighter and definitely acts like she feels it. Abby’s playful energy and puppy-like attitude don’t really line up with what anyone thinks her age should be—which, by the way, is a mystery. Her previous owner claimed she’s 11; the vet guessed about 5; the foster thinks somewhere in between or closer to 10 or 11. Regardless, Abby’s lively, social, and loves walks as much as a good snuggle. She’ll leap onto your lap and might get a little mouthy when thrilled, but it’s not meant aggressively. A couple of times, Abby did snap when moved off a lap—no broken skin, but she made her feelings clear. It’s not certain if that’s from pain or just a strong preference to stay put, so whoever adopts her will need to be mindful. Around other dogs, she’s reactive at first (barking, growling), yet settles with slow introductions. She’s likely had limited socialization, especially with big dogs, so ongoing work here would help her continue to grow. Abby’s best fit is probably a home without young kids, though she’s been fine with older children. She currently lives with other dogs and cats and is adjusting just fine. Abby’s skin issues could be a result of previous neglect or a tendency toward allergies, which is common for her breed. Any adopter should be prepared for possible long-term skin care or allergy medication needs. Despite her past, Abby is ready to find someone who loves her for who she is—playful, affectionate, and always looking for a good lap to claim. Ready to meet your new best friend? Apply now!
