About Adelaide

Adelaide is a true terrier mix with the spunk of a Jack Russell, the smarts of a rat terrier, and a good dose of drama queen energy. She first turned up in downtown Portland, unable to walk and in rough shape, but she’s proven to be a scrappy survivor. Thanks to surgery and some serious resilience, she’s now back on all four legs, running and hiking just like she’s meant to. Adelaide currently has a steel implant in one hind leg, and while her other knee sometimes pops out, she handles it fine for now. There’s a chance she could need more surgery down the road—the rescue has her back if that happens. Weighing in at a lean 14 pounds, Adelaide is house and crate trained and loves riding in the car. She’s great on leash and has impressive recall off leash, especially when out on trails. She gets along with other dogs but likes to be the boss—expect some theatrical vocals, especially when something exciting is about to happen. Because she gets loud when amped up, apartments and condos are not a fit—Adelaide needs a single-family home where her vocals won’t get her (or you) in trouble. She’s never shown aggression, just a big personality in a small body. If you’re looking for a hiking buddy who’s full of energy and won’t hold back her opinions, Adelaide is waiting in Clatskanie, OR. She’s ready for her next act. Questions about Adelaide

  • What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?

Adelaide, as a terrier mix, is best suited for a home with space to roam and plenty of outlets for her energy. Terriers thrive in single-family homes with secure yards, which matches her foster's recommendations as well.

  • How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?

Terriers like Adelaide benefit from a yard or ready access to outdoor space where they can run, play, and explore. Without a yard, daily long walks or hikes are important to keep her satisfied.

  • Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?

Jack Russell and rat terriers are generally friendly with children but can be excitable and assertive. Adelaide would likely do best with older kids who understand dog boundaries.
