The Bearded Collie is a Scottish herding dog, bred to move sheep and cattle across rough hill country, often out of the shepherd's sight. That work gave the breed stamina, independent thinking and a shaggy double coat that sheds rain. Medium-sized at 40 to 60 pounds, Beardies are born black, blue, brown or fawn, and their coats usually lighten as they mature.
Seattle's hills and damp weather echo the breed's Highland roots, and many Beardies seem happiest outdoors. Many are affectionate with family and friendly with strangers, but they can be stubborn and often bark. Budget time for daily exercise, patient reward-based training and thorough weekly brushing, since wet weather tangles that long coat quickly. Beardies vary, so spend time with a dog before deciding.
