The American Foxhound was developed in colonial Maryland and Virginia from English and French hounds, and it's still a lean, long-legged scent hound built to follow a trail for hours. The close, hard coat comes in any color, though tricolor and red and white are common. Most stand 21 to 26 inches tall and weigh 55 to 70 pounds.
In Nashville, that nose will find plenty of interesting smells, from creekside greenways to neighborhoods where coyotes are active. Most Foxhounds are gentle and good with other dogs, but they're independent, food-driven and loud when bored. Hounds coming out of hunting kennels may need help learning house manners, stairs and leash walking. Plan on a securely fenced yard, a leash anywhere open, and patient, reward-based training. Dogs vary, so judge each hound on its own personality.
