Meet Lola, a beautiful 2-year-old, 13-pound black-and-white Shih Tzu whose past is hard to comprehend—but whose future can still be extraordinary. For far too long, Lola was terribly neglected. She wasn’t given the veterinary care or grooming she needed, and by the time she finally came to us this week, the matting around one of her legs had become so severe that it had cut off the circulation. There was no way to save the leg. At only two years old, Lola had to undergo an amputation because of neglect that was entirely preventable. And yet, here is the remarkable part: Lola doesn’t feel sorry for herself. Not for one minute. She is happy. She is sweet. She loves people. And she absolutely loves to play fetch—racing after her ball with the enthusiasm of a dog who apparently never got the memo that she now has only three legs. Lola has adjusted beautifully. Three legs do not stop this little 13-pound girl from playing, loving, enjoying life or being the wonderful young dog she has always been. And they certainly shouldn’t stop someone from seeing what an incredible companion she could be. We don’t want Lola adopted because someone feels sorry for her. We want her adopted because she is a terrific little dog. She is only two. She has an entire lifetime ahead of her. Her first chapter was filled with neglect. Someone wonderful now has the chance to write the rest of her story.
