Pug Rescue of New England (PRoNE) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), all volunteer foster home based rescue organization. Meet Irene! A Playful, Loving Girl Who Doesn’t Let Anything Slow Her Down Meet Irene, a 5-year-old sweetheart with a big personality and an even bigger heart. Affectionately known as Reeny Beans or One Eye Rene (pun intended!), this special girl proves every day that a little difference doesn’t hold her back from living life to the fullest. Irene found her way to rescue after being abandoned at a park last summer in LA and being found by a good Sam who brought her to the shelter. She then was lucky enough to land at The Pubble with our friends from Pug Rescue LA. They fixed her up and started looking for her forever people. When the Pumba's Paws transport was being arranged they asked if we would like to take her in and seek out her family with one of our amazing adopters. Absolutely! Who's ready to give Irene the loving home she is so deserving of? At around 14 pounds, Irene is a petite, gentle, affectionate pug who loves being part of the pack — whether that’s with her dog friends or her humans. Personality Irene is the perfect mix of playful and cuddly. She’s: Affectionate and loyal Playful and curious Gentle and eager to please Adaptable and quick to learn She may be a little unsure at first in new environments — especially when navigating unfamiliar spaces due to her vision challenges — but once she settles in, her joyful, loving personality shines. She thrives on companionship and truly just wants to be included in whatever her people are doing. Special Trait Irene has one eye, which affects her depth perception. Because of this: She may hesitate with stairs or jumping down from furniture- training for pet stairs will help She benefits from a consistent layout in the home- hope you like the way your furniture is arranged! She sometimes relies on sound cues (like clapping or calling) to locate her people Don’t let this fool you — Irene doesn’t let her vision impairment stop her from playing, exploring, or having fun! Social Life Irene believes everyone was put on this earth to be her friend: Loves people and greets them happily Dog-friendly and enjoys playing with her canine companions Loves being part of a pack and even grooms other dogs affectionately She’s not dominant or pushy — she just wants friendship and playtime. Favorite Things Playing tug (with dogs or humans!) Snuggling close to her people or dog friends Car rides and tagging along on outings Being carried and included in adventures- related to her vision impairment, not mobility, Irene gets around just fine! Activity & Lifestyle Irene is a fun-loving girl who would happily join you for adventures — with a few accommodations. She’d love: Trips to the beach or coffee shops Walks or outings (and even being carried in a backpack for longer adventures!) Hanging out as your work-from-home buddy (she’s great during Zoom calls!) She also enjoys her downtime and will happily curl up for cuddles. Training & Routine Crate trained (can comfortably stay crated 4–5 hours if needed) alternatively she could be secured in a safe area of the home. Irene is being crated in her foster home when her foster parents leave for safety Rides well in the car Knows basic commands Praise-motivated rather than food-driven She will do best in a safe, predictable environment to prevent accidents due to her limited depth perception. Health One eye (vision impairment related to healed injury and cataract affecting depth perception) Irene gets an anti-inflammatory eye drop once daily. The cost is under $20/ bottle. She will need to see an ophthalmologist annually for follow up care Takes Famotidine (5mg) currently for acid reflux- this is an inexpensive OTC medication and will need to be given for life, or an alternative treatment at the advice of your veterinarian Prefers soft food (currently eats twice daily) Eats and drinks from elevated bowls related to history of regurgitation and esophagitis; it is important that this routine is continued in her adoptive home. She is using a Fluff Trough and doing very well with it. Irene had surgery to repair a luxating patella in her hind left limb in January of this year while at Pug Nation. She is fully healed and doing very well. Irene's eye socket was also surgically repaired and treated for infection after complications from enucleation prior to coming into Pug Nation LA. She has had no further issues. Quirks Loves giving other dogs “tongue baths” Can be a bit vocal at times (especially at mealtime or during outside activity) May get anxious with stairs or when she loses track of her people — but she quickly finds them with a sniff, or following voices Ideal Home Irene would thrive in a home that offers: Minimal stairs or a layout that’s easy to navigate. Stairways gated A calm or moderately active household A family who will include her in daily life A canine companion (preferred but not required) Someone who understands her vision needs and keeps her environment consistent Dog savvy children aged 10 and older Fenced yard a plus, but not required Continue to provide for all medical needs with annual vet visits and specialists as needed Provide consistent preventative measures for flea, tick and heartworm She would make an amazing companion for someone who wants a loving, portable best friend to bring along for life’s adventures. Why Irene? Irene is resilient, loving, and full of life. She doesn’t see the world the way other dogs do — but she feels it deeply, and she shares that love generously with everyone around her. If you’re looking for a sweet, playful, devoted companion who will stick by your side through everything, Irene just might be your girl!
