DO YOU LIKE THEM A LITTLE KOOKY? You are going to love Dunn. Dunn's back story is actually quite bittersweet. He was originally adopted, as a youngster, from our local shelter, back in 2011. We know this because he is chipped. Dunn was found in a parked car, by police, after convenience store clerks called about an abandoned vehicle that had been sitting in their parking lot, for several days. Turns out, Dunn was not alone. His owner was found inside the car too...deceased. It was determined he had been deceased for at least three days. Animal control was called and Dunn was scanned for a chip. That is how they found out he had been adopted at the shelter 15 years ago. His original adopter had passed away too. The man in the car, was the original owners son. He was homeless and living with Dunn, out of his car for several years. Needless to say, Dunn has led a challenging but interesting life that has left it's emotional scars and bizarre behaviors. We initially figured we would just pull the ole guy from the shelter setting he was living in, and set him up in a sanctuary home where he could live out his remaining months in peace and quietude but Dunn has made it clear that he is nowhere near rocking chair status yet. Interested adopters will have to have some experience, obviously, with senior dogs and the ability to embrace senile behaviors. Dunn has a significant heart murmur for which meds have been started and if someone could let him know about his heart condition, that would be great because he has yet to receive that memo. He also has a mouth full of rotting teeth, some of them falling out on their own and others, will be pulled at his upcoming dental, once we get his heart a bit stronger. Those awful teeth have got to be so painful. On the flip side, Dunn is a great traveler and loves being in a car or truck, whether it is parked or moving. No surprise there. It is his happy place and once in, he immediately curls up and drifts off to slumber land. What he does NOT like is being alone. HATES IT. At this point, he really doesn't care WHO is with him...just that somebody is. As long as there are people close by, he is a happy camper and will blissfully lay on his bed and snooze the day away or maybe even explore a little, as much as his nearly non-existent hearing and sight, allow. Crates are the devil too and if you thought an X-Pen might be the answer...don't. At 16 years old he has the climbing skills of a spider monkey and will easily scale a four foot X pen or chain link fence, like it was a sidewalk curb. He will even pose on the top for photo ops, before launching himself to the ground below, and trotting off in victory. All he wants, is to find you, so he can be happy again. In his mind, his needs are simple. Never, ever, leave me alone. His housebreaking skills are not much to brag about either. At least not when left alone. Part of his diabolical plan to make sure you take him with you?? Maybe. Because he CAN resurrect those potty training skills, when he wants. Just be aware, he will punish any human rule breakers, with poo and pee. It is still undecided if this is accidentally from stress, or on purpose as a teaching opportunity. He is smart as Einstein too and is not the least bit ashamed or apologetic, at using it for both good and evil. Still.... There is something very likable and charming about this old fella. You have to respect his determination and perhaps using his age, to get what he wants. When he is sound asleep, his cute little face in peaceful slumber is heart melting. When he is awake and happy, it is infectious and when you think of his life, you can't help but feel a certain amount of respect for his tenacity and resilience. Perhaps he has earned his right to want a constant companion. It's not all that crazy, given he lives in a world of little sight and no sound. That he wants to enjoy humans and go for rides and walks, shows his love of life and his desire to live it. It shows that he did live a secure and happy life at one time and he is determined to do it again.. Perhaps the constant reassuring presence of human companionship, is not too much to ask for. So if you are agoraphobic (joking...sorta) and need a friend, maybe consider this old man. We have a feeling, once his mouth is healthy again and his heart meds take hold, he will do his best to stick around another couple of years. Dunn is neutered, microchipped, up to date on five way, Bordatella and rabies vaccines, is fecal tested clean of intestinal parasites and flea/tick free. He will come with a good supply of heart meds, to get you started and a few belly bands (boy diapers) for those first few rough days of transition.
