About Magnolia And Pretzel

To adopt this cat from Black Cat Rescue, please fill out a profile https://blackcatrescue.com/adopt-cat-boston Magnolia and Pretzel are a bonded pair that must go home together. They are estimated to be 3 years old. This is what their foster volunteers say about them: How would you describe the cat's general personality? Magnolia (tuxedo) and Pretzel (tabby) are two beautiful bonded females. Right now, they are pretty shy towards humans. As I write this, they're both sound asleep together in the cat tower a few feet away from me. However, they aren't quite ready for pets yet and prefer to observe humans from a distance. They are very curious, and I'll often see one or both of them looking at me out the window when I walk toward the house after work. Does the cat enjoy being pet? Not yet, but we think it's only a matter of time, especially for Magnolia. Magnolia lets out a few cute little hisses if we reach a hand toward her to pet her. Pretzel doesn't usually hiss but has a couple times swatted our hands (without claws) when trying to pet her. We are trying to work on other milestones such as treats and playing before trying to push them too hard on petting and physical contact. If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? See above. Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched? Not applicable, so far we've had a generally hands-off relationship with them. Does the cat come on your lap? No, their favorite spot is perched up on their cat tower, observing us or sleeping. Does the cat like to be held? We haven't tried to pick them up yet. Does the cat sleep in your bed? For now, we are still keeping them in the foster room they are comfortable with, so they haven't had a chance to come into our bed. Once they are a little more confident, we plan to give them free rein of our house. Does the cat seek your attention? Sometimes, when we call Magnolia for dinner, she runs from wherever to she was to be under the cot in her room (as if to get closer to us while still feeling sheltered). Does the cat like to play? We have tried playing with string toys with them. While they tracked the string with their heads, they didn't seem too interested in playing. What are the cat's favorite games and toys? There are various toys in their room, but so far they haven't been too playful yet. How vocal is the cat? Other than the occasional gentle hiss from Magnolia, these two girls are very quiet, without any audible mewing. You would definitely not have a problem with excessive noise with them! What kinds of sounds does the cat make? See above. Does the cat scratch a scratcher? There are a number of scratchers throughout their room, but we haven't seen Pretzel or Magnolia use them yet, at least in front of us. Does the cat always use the litter box? Yes, they began using the litter box as soon as we took them in and haven't had any accidents. What food and frequency is the cat currently eating? We feed them each a few tablespoons of dry food every morning. At night, we give them each a can of Fancy Feast wet food (poultry and beef flavors are their favorite). Is the cat picky about food? They don't always finish their food, but they aren't necessarily picky. We noticed them eating more since we started feeding them poultry and beef flavors exclusively. What is the cat's favorite treat? Magnolia enjoys Churu treats, although Pretzel hasn't seemed interested in these yet. Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances? Pretzel has swatted a couple of times when we've tried to pet her, but she's never broken the skin. Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you? No, neither of these cats has ever tried to scratch us. Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you? No, Pretzel and Magnolia have never nipped at us. Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)? No, they have never bitten us. To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful? We haven't had a chance to introduce them to strangers yet, but my guess is that they would be shy at first, probably hiding behind their tower or in the closet. They used to do that to us when we entered the room, but no longer do as they've learned to trust us. If you have observed the cat with other animals, please describe how they get on? We've allowed our two family cats and even our dog into their room a couple times under our supervision. They didn't engage directly, but they observed curiously from their tower. I believe they would be fine in a home with other pets. Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions? Magnolia is especially curious, and sometimes we see her exploring on the camera at night. When we move the camera around to track her, she often walks over and gives the camera adorable nose boops. Pretzel has such a beautiful pattern to her coat, and she has such a deep, thoughtful stare when she looks at us with those round eyes. In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt? These two cats have had a very difficult past before being rescued (I believe they were rescued from a hoarder's basement when the property was getting demolished). They aren't yet quite comfortable being petted by humans, but any home with some cushy lounging spots, ideally with a window or two, would make them so happy. What is most important of all is that these bonded girls stay together, as they help each other feel more brave and safe. What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them? While these are certainly not the most shy foster cats we've had, Pretzel and Magnolia will take more time to bond with their humans than some other cats. They've made huge progress in just the four weeks they've been with us, but they still have progress to make. For example, when we started fostering them, they were never comfortable sleeping in front of us. Now, I'm looking over at them both sound asleep in their cat tower, with Pretzel letting out the occasional yawn. It will take the right type of person to adopt these two girls, someone who is passionate about giving a home to two beautiful shy cats who might have otherwise been looked over. Their shy nature is not a reflection of their character, but a result of a difficult past and limited exposure to humans that were willing to open their hearts to them. It may take a couple of months or even longer before they are entirely comfortable with their humans, but that is what makes the relationship more rewarding and the trust bond stronger.
