About Myers
To adopt this cat from Black Cat Rescue, please fill out a profile https://blackcatrescue.com/adopt-cat-boston Myers is a 4 year old male cat who has had a tough start. He was the only survivor of his litter, who were attacked by coyotes and got his tail. He was formerly an indoor cat, but lost trust of humans when he was neutered. He needs a feline companion, either an already adopted cat or to be adopted with Plaza. How would you describe the cat's general personality? Myers is an extremely fearful cat around people. When touched he often freezes or shivers and may bolt away if he has the chance. He only reliably comes out when other cats are around and is much more comfortable in their presence. Without other cats nearby he tends to remain hidden. Does the cat enjoy being pet? Yes, but only after his fear wears off. After a minute of pets, he will often start purring and lean into the pets and even rub his nose on your hand. If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? Once he relaxes he enjoys full body pets and head pets. He doesn't like head pets until he's started to relax, preferring shoulder/spine pets at first. Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched? Initial touch is very frightening for him and he may freeze, shiver, or try to escape. But he has never swatted. Does the cat come on your lap? No. Does the cat like to be held? No. If picked up he will struggle and bolt away as powerfully as possible. Does the cat sleep in your bed? No. Does the cat seek your attention? No. He prefers to hide or observe from a distance and has not become particularly socialized to people. Does the cat like to play? Occasionally, mostly at night. What are the cat's favorite games and toys? He has played with a laser pointer and will sometimes roam and jump around a bit at night. How vocal is the cat? Usually quiet. What kinds of sounds does the cat make? When completely alone he sometimes makes an adorably high‑pitched squeak. Does the cat scratch a scratcher? Not clearly observed yet. If no, please explain. N/A Does the cat always use the litter box? Yes, although if he gets super scared (like at the vet), he will pee before bolting. If no, please explain. N/A What food and frequency is the cat currently eating? He eats wet food, dry food, Greenies, and loves Churu treats. Is the cat picky about food? He is a slow eater and will sometimes wait a long time before eating, occasionally letting food sit for much of the day. What is the cat's favorite treat? Churu (do NOT leave it unattended where he can reach, he will eat it including the wrapper, which can be dangerous!) Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances? He often hisses initially when approached or touched but does not escalate. Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you? No. Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you? No. Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)? No. To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful? Very fearful. He prefers to hide or observe from a distance and has not become particularly social with people. If you have observed the cat with other animals, please describe how they get on? He does very well with other cats. He cuddles at night with a female foster and loves a resident orange cat, often coming out to greet him and rub against him, even when people are around. Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions? He can remain extremely still during the day but becomes much more active after dark, roaming, playing a little, and doing most of his eating at night. He's adjusted well to losing his tail, and can spring vertically to an impressive height. In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt? Myers loves hanging out with other cats and clearly enjoys their company. In a home with friendly cats he becomes much more active and engaged. An adopter should choose Myers if they’re interested in working with a tricky (but not at all mean) cat who may not behave exactly like they’re used to. What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them? Interacting with Myers can be tricky, he is extremely fearful of people and will hide if given the opportunity and if there is an unreachable hiding place (like under a bed) he may stay there and only come out to eat when no one is around. Managing the space so that hiding spots are limited helps ensure necessary interactions and care. We’ve also given him a “hiding spot” (cat tube) that is actually very reachable so we can interact with him often. He does best when other cats are present.
