Jake is a sweet, 3 year old, 15lb Chihuahua mix with a gentle heart and a story that will tug at yours. Jake recently went through something no dog should ever have to experience. His home was lost in a fire, and with nowhere else to go, his family had to bring him to a crowded shelter in New Mexico. When he arrived, he still smelled strongly of smoke...a heartbreaking reminder of how suddenly his whole world changed. One day he had a home, and the next he found himself in a loud, unfamiliar place surrounded by strangers. Understandably, Jake has been a little confused at the shelter. It’s a scary place for any dog, especially one who just went through such a traumatic event. But even after everything he’s been through, Jake’s sweet personality still shines through. He is friendly with people, enjoys affection, and seems relieved whenever someone stops to give him a little attention and reassurance. Jake is also great with other dogs. He’s a nice, easygoing little guy who seems happy just to be near people and feel safe again. At around 15 pounds, he’s the perfect size for cuddles on the couch, neighborhood walks, and tagging along on daily adventures. What Jake needs most now is a fresh start - a loving home where he can finally exhale, feel secure again, and leave the chaos of the shelter behind him. With a little patience and a lot of love, we have no doubt Jake will blossom into a loyal, affectionate companion. After everything he’s been through, Jake deserves a soft bed, a warm home, and a family who will never let him face scary things alone again. *Please note that we are guessing that Jake is potty trained since he had a home prior to being rescued. However, he is still in transition from the shelter into a foster home, so we cannot confirm if he is or is not potty trained yet.* Farfel's Rescue and our New Mexico rescue partners would love to see Jake in a home with an individual, family (older kids are preferred so there's no tail-pulling or awkward handling) or active retirees who have the time and love for a very loyal and sweet dog. We'd hate to see him left alone all day while his family works full-time outside of the home, as he is much too social for that type of arrangement. We'd like to place Jake in a home where he'll get consistent stimulation, exercise and love. A (virtual or in-person) positive reinforcement group training class promotes great behavior, bonding and confidence. Training is so important in the future behaviors of every dog. It's for this reason that we're unwilling to adopt to a family that doesn't make this loving choice. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of both in-person and virtual positive reinforcement / force- free trainers in your area. Jake is up to date on his vaccinations, has been fully vetted, is healthy, heartworm negative, and is neutered. Farfel's Rescue is a fully foster based rescue, and offers a one week trial with every adoption. We feel that this is much more beneficial to not only the dog, but the adopter too. We believe that only getting 20-30 minutes with a dog before deciding on a lifetime commitment is not a fair amount of time to the adopter, or the dog. Therefore we give adopters one week with the dog to assure it is the right fit, and offer a full refund of their adoption fee should it not workout within the week trial.
