Meet Johnny Johnny did not arrive with us in good shape. When he first came through our doors, he was hurting, scared, and clearly had been for a long time. He growled when touched and would not let anyone near his ears. His body told the story before he ever could. Since then, everything has changed. Johnny underwent surgery to remove a painful toe that turned out to be cancer. Our veterinarian was able to get clear margins, and we are hopeful that Johnny still has some good years ahead of him. Once the pain was gone, the real Johnny started to show up. He feels better now. And it shows. One morning before the store opened, Johnny was able to run and play in the fenced parking lot with Minerva, the service dog of one of the Jefferson Feed employees. Watching him move comfortably, running on all four legs and clearly enjoying himself, was something none of us will forget. Johnny has formed deep attachments to the people who care for him. He knows his favorite staff members by sight and sound and makes sure they know when they walk by his kennel. The dog who once would not allow touch now lets people clean his ears without protest. That kind of trust does not happen unless a dog is finally feeling safe and comfortable. But Johnny is lonely. He does not want to spend his days in a kennel. He wants a home. He wants someone to love him the way he is loving us right now. He may be a little older, but he still enjoys running, playing, and being around other dogs. He would do wonderfully with a calm, level headed adult dog who might enjoy a sidekick or partner in crime. Johnny does not need perfection. He needs a person. A couch. A routine. Someone who will choose him, not for how much time he has left, but for who he is right now. Johnny is ready for the rest of his life to be the best part. Adoption fee includes vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, microchip and a heartworm test. Any dog that tests positive for heartworms can be treated through our Fix-A-Heart Program. Adopter has to buy a year supply of heartworm prevention before treatment begins.
