About Birdie May

Dog name: Birdie May Breed: Hound Mix Sex: Female Age: 10-12 months Weight: 30-ish pounds Medical Needs: None Housebroken: Getting on a regular schedule. Poor Birdie May didn't have any house/potty learning prior to coming to us. We've found that she needs to out every 2hrs or so. She's been doing great with this schedule! If we have to go away for a few hours, we know we will have to clean her kennel when we get back. Her tiny bladder can't hold it. When she pees, she pees a little at a time. Good in a crate: Yes and no. When she has a toy with her, she settles and focuses on the toy. If the other dogs in the room with her start barking, she chimes in. About a week ago, one of the dogs started howling and then all 3 were howling! Lol. I've never heard this for them before. I said no or stop and they stopped. She would rather be with you in the house. Again, she's not use to being in a home so she doesn't know what to do. I'd recommend puppy bands for female dogs. Good in the car: Yes Good on a leash: Working on it. If there's a loud noise, she'll freak out until I calm her down. Energy level: She is a puppy and had the puppy energy! She'll calm down and sit with you so you can pet her. Need a fenced in yard: No, but should be leashed at all times as new sounds and people scare her very easily. Dog Friendly: Yes! She loves dogs and currently lives with our 3 bigger dogs, 2 other foster dogs that are about her size. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? No. She can entertain herself. She will stick with you to learn your habits and routines. She listens better when there's not another dog taking her focus off you. Cat Friendly? Yes Kid Friendly: Unsure but I believe she'd be fine with kids. If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? 7 due to her small size. She still stretches her paws up to us to be petted. This will obviously need some training so I wouldn't let a small dog get in her face or near the paws because she can stratch a child. Kids should be disciplined with being around new animals and how they interact. Traits that make your foster special: Birdie May aka Birdie Mac aka Bird-ticia aka Dirty Birdie is a sweet small dog. She looks like she could have chi mix in her and maybe Whippet. I wish I knew her back story but she's not had house rules or training. I don't know if she's had the luxury of being in a home. Everything has been new to her. Don't pee/potty in the house, flipping out with being on a leash for the first time, toys, etc. She needs a family that is willing to put time and training in for her. She loves attention and will give kisses now. She loves treats and bones. I take her into the shower with me to give her a bath and she's very good with getting a bath. She is doing so much better with walking on a leash in the yard but we're right off Rt 13 and sometime the loud trucks and horns scare her. We're really proud of her with waiting to go potty/pee outside. We changed her food the other week and it didn't agree with her tummy so she's on our dog's food which is Purina Pro Chicken & Rice or Lamb & Rice. That has helped her digestion.
