Johnny
AvailableThis red and chestnut longhaired standard dachshund is an adult male who has been neutered and is up to date on vaccinations. Johnny has a small build and is currently being cared for by Dachshund Rescue of North America Inc. His coat is long and striking, reflecting his unique breed heritage. He does not get along with cats or children, and he is looking for a very specific experienced home willing to support his energetic and boisterous personality.
About Johnny
Your new best friend is just one click away. Johnny is a stunning red longhaired standard dachshund with a striking black overlay—a true rare find for dachshund lovers! He needs a highly experienced, doxie-savvy adopter with a single-family home featuring a large, secure, dig-proof fenced yard (no electric or invisible fences, pools, or doggie doors). Johnny thrives with a young, playful dachshund buddy of similar size who enjoys energetic wrestling sessions; no large dogs, cats, other furry animals, or children, please. His curious and mischievous personality means he loves to dig, pull up tree roots, chew on branches, and yes, bark loudly and often. Johnny has a strong prey drive and will chase and potentially harm small animals that enter his yard. He is crate-trained but really needs a home where crating is minimal, since his high energy demands freedom to be active. He is not truly leash-trained as he is quite the puller, and he may have accidents in the house. Apartment, condo, and townhouse living will not work for Johnny due to his vocal nature and digging habits. If you adore a classic, spirited dachshund and understand their quirks—without wanting to "fix" them—Johnny will fill your heart with joy! Only local adopters in Maryland will be considered, and you must be willing to meet in Ellicott City, just south of Baltimore, for a personal home visit and adoption. Make their next chapter their best one yet.

Questions about Johnny
What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?
The dachshund is best suited for a stable, secure home with plenty of opportunities for exercise and mental stimulation. They do well in single-family homes with yards, as their hunting instincts make them love outdoor exploration and digging.
How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
Dachshunds benefit from daily outdoor time in a secure area, especially since they love to dig and sniff. A yard is ideal, but they must always be supervised and fenced in to prevent escapes.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
Dachshunds can be good with respectful older children, but their strong personalities and potential for nipping mean they may not be the best match for homes with young kids.
