About Herbie

Make their next chapter their best one yet. Herbie is a lovable Labrador Retriever/Hound mix with a heart for people. While he gets excited to meet new folks, he shows wonderful manners — no barking or jumping when greeting people at home or out on walks. During the day and at night, he's content to snooze solo on the sofa, but he's happiest with a companion nearby, often aiming to cuddle up on your lap! Herbie is patient at mealtime, sitting and waiting for the cue before digging in, and he gently accepts treats, enjoying food puzzles and games. He relishes two 30-minute walks each day and would likely be thrilled with even more outside time. At home, he prefers short yard breaks unless you’re out there to keep him company. He's suited to life in either a house or apartment, thriving with regular walks and human engagement rather than relying on a yard to hang out in. His leash walking skills are coming along, especially as he calmly sits to let people pass. However, he can be reactive around other dogs, at times barking or jumping if they get too close. Ongoing practice is helping him make progress in this area. Herbie is trustworthy to stay loose in the house for several hours, especially after a good walk and meal, and he's mainly housebroken, signaling to go out by standing at the back door and whining. While Herbie doesn't need to be crated, he is very vocal in the car, making him less suited to long road trips but fine for brief vet visits. Applicants hoping to adopt Herbie must live within an hour of Cary, NC, due to foster arrangements, veterinary care, and home visit requirements. Every animal deserves a happy ending. This one starts with you.
