Douglas
AvailableDouglas is a male Terrier/Mixed Breed with a white and cream coat who is around 5 years and 8 months old. He is considered medium-sized and is up to date on his vaccinations. Despite his partial paralysis and recent medical hardships, Douglas is living in New York, NY and looking for someone to give him the stability and care he needs.
About Douglas
Douglas’s story isn’t like most. Found injured and dragging his hind legs on an Antiguan roadside, he had clearly survived far more than a single accident. His wounds, likely from a pack attack, left him partially paralyzed in his hindquarters. He’s since made his way to Animal Haven in New York, where the team is focused on unraveling his medical needs and plotting a new path forward—one that may include surgery or a wheelchair, if feasible. Right now, Douglas is undergoing detailed diagnostics: spinal x-rays, a neuro consult, and care for concurrent challenges like heartworm, ehrlichia, a urinary tract infection, and open wounds on his legs. The rescue has committed to cover all diagnostic and treatment costs for whoever adopts him, removing major barriers to his care. As for Douglas himself, he’s weathered a rough start but remains full of the quiet charm that makes an underdog win people over. If you’re drawn to animals who need an extra lift—and can manage the uncertainty that sometimes comes with serious physical disability—Douglas may be exactly the companion you’ve been hoping to meet. Douglas, as a medium Terrier mix, would usually benefit from moderate outdoor time, but his partial paralysis means he’ll need closely supervised, accessible outdoor areas for fresh air and stimulation.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
Terrier mixed breeds are often patient and friendly, making them great companions for children. Douglas’s disabilities mean young kids should be taught to interact gently and respectfully.
