The Miniature Dachshund is the smaller of the Dachshund's two official sizes, weighing 11 pounds or less as an adult. German hunters scaled the badger dog down so it could follow rabbits into narrow burrows, which explains the long back, short legs and surprisingly big voice. Coats come smooth, longhaired or wirehaired, and the grooming each needs differs a little.
Many Minis are clever, bold and devoted, with a stubborn streak and a nose that tugs toward every smell. Some bond closely with one person and bark at visitors. Protecting the spine matters most: keep the dog lean, use ramps instead of jumps and lift with support under the chest and hips. Like any breed, Minis vary, so the dog in front of you counts more than the label.
