The Bearded Collie is a Scottish herding dog with a shaggy double coat, a long beard and a bright, inquiring face. It was bred to drive sheep and cattle across rough hill country, which explains the stamina and the independent streak. Adults typically weigh 40 to 60 pounds and stand 20 to 22 inches tall.
That stamina fits a city with off-leash parks on nearly every side of town, provided the dog gets out daily. The weatherproof coat copes with cold winters, but it needs steady brushing to handle snow, mud and foothill burrs. Beardies are cheerful and chatty, so thin apartment walls and long days alone can both be a challenge. Each Beardie differs, and a dog's own personality counts for more than the breed label.
