The Toy Poodle is the smallest of the three Poodle sizes, usually 4 to 8 pounds and 10 inches or less at the shoulder. It was scaled down from the Miniature in the early twentieth century as a companion, and it keeps the Poodle's dense, curly coat in solid colors from black and white to apricot and silver.
Toy Poodles are affectionate, alert and quick to learn. Many are wary of strangers at first and bark at unfamiliar sounds, which matters in apartment buildings and close townhome rows. Dogs vary, and a Toy Poodle's history affects its confidence as much as its breed does, so gentle, upbeat training goes a long way. Their small, fine bones need protection from falls and rough play.
