Wirehaired Terrier is a coat description as much as a breed. It's another name for the Wire Fox Terrier, an English terrier developed to bolt foxes from their dens, but listings also use it for wire-coated terrier mixes with Jack Russell, Border, Cairn or Schnauzer ancestry. Either way, expect a dense, crisp outer coat over a softer undercoat.
Most are small, sturdy and quick, around 13 to 25 pounds, and live 12 to 15 years. They tend to be friendly, curious and bold, with classic terrier habits of barking, digging and chasing small animals. The coat sheds little but needs regular stripping or clipping, so a groomer becomes part of the routine. Because ancestry varies, each dog's size, energy and coat matter more than the label.
