The Pointer, also called the English Pointer, was developed in England to find birds and then freeze in a rigid stance that shows the hunter where they're hiding. It's a lean, muscular dog with a short, glossy coat, usually white with liver, lemon, orange or black patches. Adults typically weigh 45 to 75 pounds and stand 23 to 28 inches tall, and many live 12 to 15 years.
Many Pointers are gentle and affectionate with their families, if a bit reserved with strangers. Field-bred dogs have plenty of stamina and a strong urge to chase birds, so a Pointer in Midland does best with secure fencing, a leash outside it, and reward-based training. Dogs vary, and one from field lines may need more activity than a calmer one.
