The Bearded Collie is a Scottish herding dog, bred to move sheep and cattle across rough hill country and to think for itself while doing it. That heritage shows up in a shaggy double coat, a springy, bouncing walk and plenty of stamina. Most weigh 40 to 60 pounds and stand 20 to 22 inches tall, a medium dog that looks bigger under all that hair.
Beardies are usually cheerful and friendly, and many love people of every age. They can also be stubborn and noisy, and the coat needs thorough brushing every week to stay free of mats. In a city of tight rowhouse blocks, a Beardie's bark carries through shared walls, so training and daily exercise matter. Dogs vary, so a Beardie's own history and personality count for more than the breed label.
