The Bearded Collie is a Scottish herding dog that once moved sheep and cattle across rough hill country, often out of the shepherd's sight. That work left Beardies with stamina, a habit of thinking for themselves and a shaggy, weatherproof double coat. They're medium-sized, at 40 to 60 pounds and about 20 to 22 inches tall, and usually live 12 to 15 years. Puppies are born black, blue, brown or fawn, and the coat typically lightens as they mature.
Beardies are known for a cheerful, clownish streak and the famous bounce when they're excited. Many are affectionate and friendly with strangers, but they can be stubborn and many bark. In Charlotte, that means planning for daily exercise, patient reward-based training and weekly brushing to keep that long coat free of mats, especially after muddy greenway walks.
