The Bearded Collie is a Scottish herding dog, built to move sheep and cattle across rough hill country. That work left it with stamina, an independent streak and a shaggy double coat with the trademark beard. Puppies are born black, blue, brown or fawn, and the coat usually lightens as they mature.
Beardies are cheerful, bouncy and usually friendly, but they're also energetic, sometimes stubborn and often vocal. In Jackson, plan on daily walking time, patient reward-based training and a thorough brush-out every week, and more often when wet weather leaves the coat damp. Dogs vary, so a Beardie's own history and energy level matter more than the breed's reputation. Most do best living indoors with their people.
