The Bearded Collie is a Scottish herding dog bred to move sheep and cattle across rough hill country, often out of the shepherd's sight. That work produced a dog with stamina, an independent streak and a shaggy double coat that sheds weather. Puppies are born black, blue, brown or fawn, and the coat usually lightens as they mature.
In Minneapolis, that coat handles the cold well, but it also collects snow, street salt and lake-trail mud, so towel-drying and a thorough weekly brushing matter to prevent mats. Beardies are usually affectionate, friendly with strangers and bouncy, though they can be stubborn and are often vocal. They do best with daily exercise, patient reward-based training and plenty of time with their people.
