The Affenpinscher is a German toy breed that started out as a stable and kitchen ratter, and its name means monkey-like terrier. Adults usually weigh 7 to 12 pounds and stand 9 to 12 inches tall, with a wiry, shaggy coat that forms a mane and beard around an expressive face. The coat is most often black, and it sheds very little.
Many Affenpinschers are confident, curious and playful, with far more attitude than their size suggests. They tend to be loyal to their people, alert to every sound and sometimes bossy with bigger dogs. They suit adults or families with older children who enjoy a characterful little dog and can be patient with housetraining. Like any breed, each dog varies.
