Farmers in the Bavarian Alps developed the Giant Schnauzer as a bigger, tougher version of the Standard Schnauzer, able to drive cattle to market and guard the farm overnight. Later it watched over breweries, butcher shops and stockyards, and in the twentieth century it served as a police and military dog. Today's Giant is a powerful, square-built dog with a harsh wiry coat in solid black or pepper and salt, finished with the breed's trademark beard and bushy eyebrows.
Giants tend to be loyal, territorial and very intelligent, devoted to their family and watchful toward strangers. They learn fast but also test boundaries, so they suit experienced owners who enjoy daily training and structure. Expect high exercise needs, a slow journey to maturity and regular professional grooming. In the right hands, they are steady, playful and deeply attached companions.
