Bearded Collies are Scottish herding dogs, bred to move sheep and cattle across rough hill country, often out of the shepherd's sight. That work produced stamina, independent thinking and a shaggy, weatherproof double coat. They're medium-sized, usually 40 to 60 pounds and 20 to 22 inches tall, and puppies born black, blue, brown or fawn commonly fade to lighter shades as they mature.
Beardies are known for an exuberant, clownish streak, including a habit of bouncing straight up when excited. Many are affectionate with family and friendly with strangers, but they can be stubborn and many are vocal. Living with one in Denver means building in daily exercise, patient reward-based training and thorough weekly brushing to keep the coat free of mats, while remembering that every dog's personality differs.
