The Miniature Dachshund is the smaller of the Dachshund's two official sizes, weighing 11 pounds or less as an adult. German hunters scaled the badger dog down to follow rabbits into narrow burrows, and the long back, short legs, deep chest and big bark all come from that work. Minis come in smooth, longhaired and wirehaired coats, and the coat decides how much brushing a dog needs.
Many Minis are clever, bold and devoted, with a stubborn streak and a nose that tugs toward every smell. They often bond closely with one person and can be wary or vocal with strangers. In SF, where sidewalks are full of dogs, smells and sudden noise, that mix rewards patient leash training and steady, short walks. Dogs vary, so a Mini's own personality matters more than the breed description.
