Mountain Curs came out of Appalachian homesteads in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and Ohio, where families needed a tough dog to tree squirrels and raccoons, hold larger game and guard the farm. The result is a stocky, short-coated medium dog, usually 30 to 60 pounds, often brindle, black, yellow or blue, and many have a natural bobtail. The UKC registered the breed in 1998, and the AKC added it to its Foundation Stock Service in 2017.
Many are loyal, smart and driven, with stamina to spare and a strong prey drive. Some are territorial with unfamiliar dogs. In Tucson, that points to an experienced owner with secure fencing and a plan for summer, when outdoor work shifts to dawn. The short coat is easy to keep up, though desert dust and prickly plants add a few chores.
