A single curly-coated kitten born on a Cornwall farm in 1950 started the Cornish Rex, a breed defined by a natural recessive mutation. Most cats have three layers of hair, but the Cornish Rex has only the soft down layer, which lies in tight, even waves that feel like warm suede. Add a lean, arched body, long legs, an egg-shaped head, a Roman nose and very large ears, and the look is unmistakable.
Many Cornish Rex cats are energetic, people-focused and kitten-like well into adulthood, often fetching toys, following their humans and seeking out warm laps. They usually do best with company and daily play. Their thin coat sheds little but offers little protection from cold or sun, so they need an indoor home, warm resting spots, occasional baths and regular ear cleaning, and they are not truly hypoallergenic.
