The Black Mouth Cur came out of the rural South, where farmers and hunters needed one dog to tree squirrels and raccoons, bay hogs, move cattle and watch the homestead. Its exact roots in Tennessee or Mississippi are debated, and it's often linked with the dog in Old Yeller. The United Kennel Club recognizes the breed, but the AKC doesn't. Most have a short, dense yellow, red, fawn or brindle coat and a dark muzzle.
Adults typically weigh 40 to 95 pounds, with plenty of muscle and stamina. In Spokane, that drive means a cur does best with a daily job, from trail runs to scent games, and its short coat needs little more than weekly brushing. Many are loyal, protective and wary of strangers, though each dog's personality varies.
