Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the central plateau of Turkey, where dogs of this type have protected flocks from wolves for thousands of years. They're big and rangy, with males often 110 to 150 pounds, and most wear a short to medium fawn coat with a dark mask. A thick undercoat means heavy seasonal shedding.
Anatolians are usually calm, observant and loyal to their family, but they decide for themselves when to act, and many are wary of strangers and inclined to roam. They mature slowly, often by age two or three, and respond best to patient, consistent training. In Virginia Beach, that means tall, secure fencing and early socialization to leashed walks past neighbors, joggers and other dogs.
