The Basset Hound is a low, long-bodied scent hound with droopy ears, loose wrinkled skin and a mournful face. The breed traces back to French hounds that trailed rabbits and hare at a pace hunters could follow on foot, and it was later made heavier in Britain. Adults usually weigh 40 to 65 pounds on legs only 11 to 15 inches tall, so they're heavier than they look.
Bassets are typically mellow, sociable and patient, with a stubborn streak and a loud bay. In Richmond, that means unhurried walks, a leash or secure fencing, and a plan for the neighbors if barking becomes a habit. Ears and skin folds need regular cleaning, and portions need watching, since extra weight strains the back. As with any breed, each Basset's personality varies.
